Description

The 2007 edition of the City of Springfield ornament series celebrates the Lincoln Family in Springfield. Abraham Lincoln came to Springfield form New Salem in 1837. He entered the practice of law as junior partner to John Todd Stuart. Within four years, he left Stuart’s practice and became partners with Stephen Logan. 1844William H. Herndon joined him as a junior partner.

Meanwell, Lincoln became acquainted with Mary Todd  from Lexington, KY. Abraham and Mary were married in 1842. They has first son, Robert Todd 1843 and the only son to live to adulthood. Edward Baker 1846 died at 3 years, William Wallace died at 12 years and Thomas passed at 18 years.

The sculptures on the south side of the Old capital Plaza depict Mrs. Lincoln smoothing her husbands lapel in preparation for his delivery if a speech while Willie is waving to Robert standing nearby. they are placed in front of Lincoln-Herndon Law offices building downtown Springfield.
